How I Clean and Disinfect My Make Up Brushes (Very Affordable!!)

Cleaning your make up sponges and brushes regularly is very important since they can easily gather dirt, sebum, old make up and bacteria from each use. And every time you use them again, you're reapplying all those nasty stuff on your face.

Since I regularly clean my brushes and sponges, buying brush cleaners would be too costly for me. I have never bought any brush cleaner in my life since I I discovered this method of cleaning and disinfecting my make up brushes. I just didn't feel the need to spend a lot of money since this method is already effective enough in cleaning my brushes.

I've tried other methods before like using baby shampoo, regular bar of soap but I find this method to be the best in getting rid of all traces of make up (especially the stubborn foundation residue).

To clean my brushes I use:

an antibacterial dishwashing liquid

extra virgin olive oil

small bowl

Depending on how many brushes I have to clean, my ratio is usually 1:2 tbsp (oil:diswashing liquid). I dip my brush in the mixture making sure that it touches both the oil and dishwashing liquid. Then I swirl the bristles against my hand, then rinse it with water.

The dishwashing liquid is the key to cleaning your brushes and getting rid of all the gunk stuck in the bristles (same way it's effective in cleaning and removing gunk from our plates). Choosing an antibacterial one disinfects it at the same time. On the other hand, the olive oil conditions your brushes since the soap can strip all the moisture away from your bristles.

Once your brushes are squeaky clean, make sure you dry them the proper way (standing or slanted). This ensures that the water slides down from your bristles and not back up to the ferrule. This is something you have to avoid so it won't dissolve the glue that holds your brushes together inside the ferrule. Preventing this will make your brushes last longer.

TIP: How To Make Any Foundation Less Cakey

There are several reasons that lead to cakey foundation:

1. Skin is not properly prepped.

A lot of us tend to forget prepping our skin prior make up application. Most of us are in a hurry in the morning that we just don't have time for the 10-step skincare that Koreans normally do. Since the skin isn't properly prepped, it remains dry, cracked and uneven which can lead to patchy and cakey foundation.

2. Applying too much foundation.

Foundation helps us achieve a perfect complexion. However, piling on layers of it is not the way to achieve the flawless look we desire. Piling it on just makes it look cakey and fake. This also applies when it comes to retouching make up through out the day. Instead of using blotting papers to remove excess sebum, some women tend to pile on powder foundation whenever they start looking oily.

So basically to avoid the cakey look, here are my 3 basic tips:

1. Prep your skin.

Moisturise moisturise moisturise! Never forget to use a moisturiser especially during fall and winter seasons when our skin gets drier. Be generous and don't be afraid to layer it (essemce/serum + cream + mist). Wait for your skin to absorb the moisture before applying make up. Having hydrated and plump skin makes it the perfect canvass for a flawless foundation application.

2. Mix your favorite serum to your foundation.

This tip was given to me by an Estee Lauder beauty consultant. When I started doing this, it changed the finish of my foundation to a dewy, glowy finish.

I saw a video by Wayne Goss wherein he adds a drop of oil into his foundation. I tried this and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I think it depends on the formulation of the foundation and

the weather. When it's hot like hell outside, I prefer to add a lightweight moisturiser than oil in my foundation.

3. Apply with a damp sponge/brush.

Using a damp sponge also helps prevent cakey foundation since it tends to sheer it out. Apply it using a dabbing motion rather than rubbing it for better application. Lately, I prefer using cushion puffs in applying my foundation. I spray it with any mist I have then dab the puff unto my face just like how I would do with a cushion foundation. It gives my foundation a dewy finish!

If you're a brush gal, try spritzing the brush with a mist before blending your foundation. It helps blend it like a dream.

Beauty Tip: Face De-Puffing Technique

Hey gorgeous!

I think y'all have seen Kate Moss' beauty tip of plunging her face in a sink full of ice-cold water with cucumber slices. I have a similar tip which involves less water and includes Green Tea instead of cucumber. This means aside from de-puffing my face I get to have skin nourishing goodness as well.

All you need are the following:

a bowl, 2 green tea sachets (the fresher the better), some ice, some cotton pads and 2 spoons

Step 1

To de-puff my eyes, I dip the 2 spoons in the cool bowl of Green Tea. Once they're cold enough, I place the spoons on my eyes for about 30 seconds to a minute.

Step 2

Next, I soak around 3 cotton pads with the cold water from the bowl. Then I place them on my forehead and cheeks. I leave them there for around 5 minutes then proceed with my skin care. On mornings when I have more time, I leave the cotton pads on longer for my skin to absorb all its goodness.

Why Green Tea (c/o WebMD)?

1. It has antioxidants.

Experts say that among other teas, green tea has the most potent antioxidants. Antioxidants counteract the negative effects of free radicals. These free radicals are by-products of the body that can lead to damage to our cells and tissues. Antioxidants work by binding to these harmful free radicals and deactivating them before they can cause damage to our body. So not only does this beauty tip make you look more rested, it also helps smooth out our skin and prevent wrinkles!

2. It is rich in Polyphenols.

Green tea is said to possess large amounts of polyphenols. These have been proven to have antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. You know what this means, bye-bye blemishes and hello clear skin!

3. It also contains Catechins.

Green tea has a lot of polyphenols and most of it are catechins. These Catechins are antioxidants that are said to have an anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown that it has the most effective ingredient against skin inflammation and cancerous changes in the skin.

I replaced Kate Moss' cucumber slices with Green tea because I find that my skin needs more of the good stuff from Green tea than with cucumber slices. The cold water makes my skin contract and tighten which is always helpful on mornings when I need to look more rested and awake. This tip is very useful for the night-owls like myself who tends to stay up all night.

First-aid Pimple Fix

Hi lovelies! Have a special date coming up but woke up with a huge pimple?

Don't worry for I am here to save your day. I will share to you my most effective emergency fix for your zit. 👍 You don't even have to look far from your home. All you need are cotton buds/Q-tips, Hydrogen Peroxide or some Iodine solution (such as Betadine) and you're ready to zap that zit.💁

Just follow these easy, fool-proof steps:

1. Soak a Q-tip or cotton bud in Hydrogen Peroxide.

2. Dab the Q-tip/bud on that sucker.

Always start with a clean face and to clean up the solution after a couple of minutes and apply a moisturizer to prevent further drying your skin.

Soooo what's the science behind its effectivity? Let's start with the expert's definition of pimples.

What is acne?

Acne begins when oil mixes with dead cells and clogs the skin's pores. Bacteria can grow in this mixture. And if this mixture leaks into nearby tissues, it causes swelling, redness, and pus. A common name for these raised bumps is pimples. -- WebMD

Why Hydrogen Peroxide?

"Hydrogen peroxide is a mild antiseptic used on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. This product works by releasing oxygen when it is applied to the affected area. The release of oxygen causes foaming, which helps to remove dead skin and clean the area." - WebMD

Therefore, not only does it help murder those acne-causing bacteria, it also helps exfoliate your skin by getting rid of your dead skin cells.Hydrogen Peroxide is also effective in preventing the spread of bacteria by killing bacterial spores as well. Not bad for a bleaching agent, eh?!

Why Betadine?

Betadine which has a generic name of Povidone Iodine and "is used to prevent and treat infection. It is a germicide, sometimes known as an antiseptic. It is used as an antiseptic for skin that is infected or that is likely to become infected. Povidone iodine works by slowly releasing iodine which kills or prevents the growth of bacteria, fungi and viruses. In general this drug is used to prevent or treat infection in wounds including ulcers, burns, cuts, minor surgical procedures and other minor injuries." - WebMD

So basically, similar to Hydrogen Peroxide, Povidine Iodine is also an effective solution in killing acne-causing bacteria on skin.

Be warned!

Woke up yesterday with an angry pus on my huge pimple (Don't you just hate that?). And after 2 days of doing this remedy, my pimple dried up soo fast.

Take note that I do not recommend the two in treating serious acne problems. Consult with a dermatologist for that. I also do not recommend you to use these if you have allergies with any of them.
