Korean High-End Cushion ft. H E R A UV Mist Cushion

Hey there, lovelies!

I feel like it's been eons since I did a beauty product review. If you've been following me for a long time you know that I'm a sucker for cushion foundations. The last cushion product I've reviewed was the Lancome Blanc Expert Cushion and if you want to know my thoughts about that cushion you can click on the link.

This new Korean cushion I'm currently obsessing about is a cushion from a high-end brand by AmorePacific. It is the H E R A UV Mist Cushion. Hera is a high-end Korean brand that is said to be comparable to high-end Western brands such as YSL, Dior, Chanel and Hourglass.

Here are my thoughts about this cushion:

PACKAGING

As I've mentioned on my previous cushion review, cushion foundations are patented in Korea by a company called, AmorePacific, the same company who released the very first cushion foundation in Korea. That's the reason why cushion foundations are packaged similarly. Brands just basically differ in the formulation of the product and the designs in their packaging.

This particular cushion is made from sturdy plastic, with its brand and name on its pearlized cover. I like that it is made of shiny plastic material because I can easily clean it up when it gets dirty. The simplistic cover also gives the cushion a more elegant look. Personally, I prefer Hera's cushion design better than Lancome's.

Since this cushion is not the 2016 version (my review for the 2016 version will be up soon), the cushion sponge does not dispense the product evenly on the puff. This does not bother me anyway because what matters is blending the product evenly on your face. The box includes the case with the cushion inside and a 15g refill (Yay! 😍👏) therefore, you get 30ml of product with its price.

DESCRIPTION AND PRODUCT CLAIMS:

Hera offers 3 options for this line: Natural Tone,Cool Tone and Long lasting (not in photo). The Natural Tone has 4 shades while the other two only has 2 shades.

This cushion claims to be a multi-functional product: mist + foundation +sunblock+whitening+cooling effects. It instantly moisturizes and cools the skin because of its clay-mineral water ingredient which helps maintain the skin's moisture, reduce skin waste, dead skin and sebum. It blocks UV rays as well as prevents damage from oxidation and heat because of its Smart Layer UV Complex derived from its 4 kinds of sunflower seed oil, beta-carotene and tocopherol. This means it does not only protect the skin from the sun, but it also prevents the so-called, "photoaging".

It claims to be a whitening / anti-UV cosmetic while providing powerful long-lasting moisturizing effect for the skin because it contains hyaluronic acid and camellia oil.The Yarrow extract in it also helps get rid of dead skin cells to reveal smoother skin.

This cushion is dermatologist-tested and remains in excellent condition for 12mos after opening.

TEXTURE

I love that this cushion has a yellow undertone and not the usual pink undertone that most Korean cushions have. It has a very light consistency thus providing a buildable coverage without looking cake-y. It claims to provide a cooling sensation on the skin which I haven't felt but maybe it's because I only use it in the morning after my skin care routine. Cleansing, toning and moisturizing makes my skin feel cold so I guess, that's why I don't feel the cooling effects of this product.

I use the cushion puff included because I believe that cushion foundations are meant to be applied on the skin using patting motions rather than buffed with a brush. It goes on the skin easily, blends like a dream and sets easily. It does feel hydrating on the skin and doesn't get sticky throughout the day.

SCENT
If you're sensitive with scents, this one may not be for you. It has a faint floral scent which I didn't really notice until I sniffed the sponge. Every time I use it, I don't really notice its scent so it doesn't really bother me.

COVERAGE

This cushion provides a buildable coverage. It doesn't cake up even when I apply several layers to try and cover up my blemishes. When I apply a second layer, it does an excellent job in covering my dark undereyes, hyperpigmentation and pimple marks. Because of its moisturizing benefits, it did not emphasize any dry patches in my skin.

I always purchase the darkest shade in every Korean cushions I've tried. Despite that, they still seem too light for me upon application. For this cushion, I purchased C23 which is Cover Tone #23, the darkest shade with high coverage. However, it still looked very light on me. But since it oxidizes a bit throughout the day, it slowly matched my face and neck.

FINISH AND LONGEVITY

I find it annoying to keep removing hair off my face and who knows what other stuff that sticks to my it throughout the day. That is why I like how this cushion doesn't feel sticky and gives a matte to semi-matte finish which is uncommon for a Korean cushion.

This product has excellent sebum control properties. It was able to keep my face matte even after 5-6 hours! However, if you have really oily skin and live in a humid country, a mattifying powder and blotting papers will be your best friends. Compared to the Lancome cushion, this one does not cling on to the dry patches on my face and provides better coverage (upon layering) that lasts throughout the day.

MY THOUGHTS:

I am in love with this cushion foundation. The quality of this cushion is outstanding. You can tell from the formulation and how it looks and feels that it is a high-end product. Its coverage is excellent. It makes it seem like my face is poreless. The wear and oil-control properties are fantastic. It is definitely by far the best cushion foundation I have ever tried. I completely understand why even though it is on the pricey-side, it's one of the best-selling cushions in Korea. And I find it very convenient that when you buy the product, everything else you need is included in the box.

I can only think of 2 cons for this cushion: (1) it is not transfer-proof and (2) it has limited shade range. Sadly, if you have medium to dark skin tone, you might not have a shade for this line.

If you're thinking of getting a high-end Western cushion, I highly suggest that you try this cushion instead. Its definitely worth its price!

Review: Korean Bamboo Charcoal Mud Pack

Charcoal masks have been popular months ago and I've been seeing girls rave about it on YouTube. I've seen some not so nice experience of girls with peel-off charcoal masks and some failed DIYs and I thought I don't want to put my skin in such distress. Besides, charcoal masks are affordable anyway so I don't see the point of DIY Charcoal Masks and decided to get one instead.

Since I love Korean masks, I decided to get a wash-off typed Charcoal Mud Mask and found one from Nature Republic. Nature Republic is probably popular for their Soothing and Moisturing 92% Aloe Vera Gel which has reached around 30 million sales worldwide. I have tried several of their skin care products so I decided to try this mud pack as well.

I've been using it for months now and finally decided it's enough time for me to come up with a decent review.

PACKAGING:

Unlike other mud packs I've seen in the market, this one comes in a green plastic tube. Since you have to squeeze the product out of it, I find that it is more hygienic and you're guaranteed to get fresh product each use. I am not a big fan of masks that come in jars or tubs for these reasons. However, because it is a MUD mask, it does tend to take a bit of effort in squeezing it out since it has a thick consistency.

When I bought it from the store, it doesn't come with any box so all the information you need is at the back of the tube. Take note that half of the description is in Korean but it is translated to English as well. You get 150g of product for the price of Php375 (around 10AUD or 9$) which is a lot considering I've been using it more than 10x (better bargain than the L'oreal Clay Masks) and I've only used up half of it.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND INGREDIENTS:

Nature republic is popular for using natural and organic ingredients but it doesn't mean you can't get an allergic reaction from them. It's not indicated whether this was dermatologist-tested and they did caution to stop using immediately if signs of irritation or rash appears.

Let's get nerdy (You can skip this):

Main ingredients indicate that it has Charcoal powder, Kaolin and Bentonite. It also has other fruit extracts (such as Cranberry and Blueberry) which probably provides some antioxidant and nourishing benefits as well.

Research claims charcoal to be good in removing dirt and impurities. It is used in water purification systems so if it's good for purifying water then it's good enough for our skin! Activated charcoal powder easily adsorbs (yes, adsorbs) impurities from the environment thus it must be stored in a tightly sealed container. This is why I like how this product from Nature Republic comes in a Tube and not a tub because everytime you open a tub you expose the product into the enviroment (Such as Elizavecca Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask which I think is quite gimmicky...and also the L'oreal Clay Masks).

Charcoal is found to be very beneficial to skin because of its properties. It has the ability to attract substances that are a thousand times its own weight to its surface and hold them there -- a process called adsorption. Because of this process, these harmful substances are rendered harmless or ineffective. To read more about these benefits of Charcoal, click on the link here.

Kaolin can be found in a lot of facial masks for its ability to purify, nourish, soothe and heal different skin types. It can help enhance blood circulation and in the elimination of wastes and toxins. Because of this property, it is good in detoxifying the skin. It is said to be good for both oily and dry skin as it helps reduce production of sebum and at the same time mineralizing the dry areas of the skin. Read more about Kaolin here.

Bentonite just like Kaolin, also contains the mineral montmorillonite--crystals found in volcanic ash. It has been used for its ability to prevent or treat facial blemishes and minor abscesses. When mixed with water and applied on skin, it helps constricts the skin which helps push out the impurities while providing anti-bacterial benefits as well. TEXTURE AND SCENT:

Since it is a mud pack, the consistency of the product is quite thick...like mud 😉. Despite the thick consistency, it is quite easy to spread on the face. It doesn't have any scent to it which is probably because of the charcoal (a natural deodorizer, it tends to get rid of odors as well).

MY THOUGHTS:

I like how this product comes in a tube which is very hygienic and preserves the product inside longer than mud pacts in tubs. I've tried other clay masks in tubs before and find it annoying how the texture changes after several months because of exposure to air. I like that this mask is easy to apply and that its texture and consistency has never changed since I opened it.

I like to prep my skin before using this: I wash my face first then open up my pores by exposing my face to steam (make sure not to burn yourself) before applying this mud pack. It doesn't take long for it to completely dry unless you apply it thickly. Notice that it changes its color from dark gray to ash gray as it dries. As it dries, it gets harder to move your face making you realize how it would probably feel like if you've had botox injections 😉😇.

When it comes to its other product claims I think it's best to refer to the photos below for reference.

Notice the difference on the size of my pores! It does a good job in making my skin feel smoother and sebum-free after each use. When it comes to blackheads removal, it does an average job since it did not get rid of everything. Some still remain especially on the tip of my nose. I guess, that would be the advantage of peel-off masks, they tend to be more effective in blackheads removal.

My skin looks a bit red after each use, either from the improved blood circulation from the Kaolin or because of the lukewarm water I used in rinsing it off 😉. But in both photos you can see the reduction of my pore size.

Overall, I find this product an average mud pack. I would love it if it was more effective in removing blackheads but I find that it is more effective in minimizing pores and controlling sebum. If oily skin and large pores are your problems, then you might love this mud pack.

According to their website, they have recently repackaged this line and reformulated it as a peel-off mask.

If you're into charcoal peel-off masks then maybe you can check the new one out. I think the new line may be more effective in removing blackheads since they're peel-off masks. Personally, I try to stay away from peel-off masks so maybe I'll try other charcoal mud masks. Still I'm quite satisfied with this product which is pretty decent for its price.

Is It Worth the Hype? Lancome Blanc Expert Cushion Foundation

Hey lovelies!

Those of you reading my blog would know that I am obsessed with cushion foundations! I realized that all the cushions I've tried are from Korea so I thought maybe it's time for me to check out Western brand cushions.

As you all know, Lancome is probably the first Western brand to release their very own cushion foundation. But did you know that cushion foundation is patented in Korea? It's patented by a Korean company called, AmorePacific, the same company who released the very first cushion foundation in Korea. That's the reason why cushion foundations all look the same. Even this Lancome Cushion is made in Korea!

I have been curious about Western brand cushions and I read a lot of mixed reviews regarding the L'oreal and Maybelline cushions. That's why I decided to get this one instead.

Here's my review of this cushion:

INGREDIENTS:

PACKAGING:

As I mentioned earlier, the Korean company, Amore Pacific has patented cushion foundations which is the reason why more or less cushion foundations have similar packaging. It comes in a white, plastic case with Lancome's classy rose logo at the center its case. It has a built-in mirror, a cushion puff with the brand's name on it and the cushion sponge which contains the product inside. Comparing the sponge to the Korean ones I have, Lancome's sponge is significantly softer. Because of this, I suggest you use a light hand when you press the cushion puff on it, as it dispenses the foundation easily.

However, unlike the Korean cushions that I have tried, Lancome sells the plastic case and the cushion foundation separately. Also, unlike its high-end Korean counterparts, it doesn't come with a free refill. What's more disappointing is that with the amount you pay, you get lesser product (14g) than the Korean brands (15g or 30g including the free refill).

PRODUCT CLAIMS:

Lancome claims this cushion to be hydrating, cooling, brightening and protecting as it unifies and sublimates complexion (I'm guessing it evens out skin tone??). It has an SPF 23 PA ++ which means it protects your skin from both UVB and UVA rays. It also claims to deliver buildable coverage with a weightless feel that will keep your complexion bright all day. It is non comedogenic, designed for Asian skin and is suitable even for those with sensitive skin. It remains in good condition for 12mos after opening the product.

TEXTURE:

Since this foundation is formulated for and tested on Asian skin, I love that it has a yellow undertone unlike the usual pink undertone most Korean cushions have. It has a very light consistency, which is probably why it is buildable without looking cake-y on your face. It claims to provide cooling sensation on the skin but I honestly do not feel my skin feeling cool and refreshed when I apply it in the morning or when I retouch in the afternoon.

Like any cushion foundation, I use the cushion puff included because I believe that cushion foundations are meant to be applied on the skin using patting motions rather than buffed with a brush. It goes on the skin easily, blends like a dream and sets easily. It does feel hydrating and doesn't feel sticky or tacky after application. However, if you have oily skin, blotting paper is your bestfriend throughout the day.

SCENT:

If you're sensitive with scents, this one may not be for you. It has a faint floral, rosy scent which disappears after a while. Personally, I like its scent. Usually, by the time I finish my make up base, I don't notice it anymore.

COVERAGE:

This cushion has a light-medium coverage and like what it claims, it is buildable. It doesn't cake up even when I apply several layers to try and cover up my blemishes. However, when it comes to my dark undereyes, hyperpigmentation and pimple marks, I still need to use a concealer. Also, I notice that it tends to emphasize the dry patches around my nose area.

Since the shade I have is too light for me, it naturally has a brightening effect on my skin. However, it does oxidize a bit throughout the day so it slowly matches my face and neck.

FINISH AND LONGEVITY

Upon application, I notice that it doesn't feel sticky unlike Korean cushions I've tried which is great. I find it annoying to keep removing hair off my face and who knows what other stuff sticks to my face throughout the day. Initially, it gives you a satin finish---not dewy, not matte. It's a perfect balance between the two. It also tends to cling on to the dry patches on my face so if you have dry skin, a good moisturiser is a must before you apply it.

This product doesn't claim to control oil so I have no expectation about its oil control properties. However, because I have a combo skin type and probably because of the humidity in my country, it tends to look dewy bordering to oily throughout the day. After 2 hours, it starts to look dewy and remains dewy throughout the day. I guess, it's not a big problem as long as you set your make up with a good mattifying powder. If you have combo or oily skin type, blotting papers will be your best friend. I actually like its finish because it makes my skin look glowy as long as I mattify my T-zone area. But if you have dry skin and have a nice chilly weather in your country, this cushion would just be perfect for you.

MY THOUGHTS:

To be honest, I love this cushion foundation. You can tell from the formulation and how it looks and feels that it is a high-end product. I think it is far better than any Korean drugstore cushion I've tried (Etude House Mineral Cushion, The Face Shop CC Aura Cushion and Chica Y Chico Mat Fix). However, what really puts me off about it is the price. You pay separately for the cushion case and the product (Cushion case costs Php 600 while cushion refill costs Php 1,850.00). Both costs a lot of money and you only get 14g of product!

Aside from my beef with its price, I washed its cushion puff once and while rinsing it, the puff was ruined. So I guess, it's not as sturdy as the Korean cushion puffs I had because I can wash and rewash them without ruining them.

Therefore, as much as I love this cushion foundation, I will not repurchase it. I would rather get a high end foundation with 30ml of product and pay the same amount than repurchase this. If I want a cushion foundation like this, maybe I'll just purchase a Lancome foundation or other high end foundation then turn it into a cushion foundation.

My Everyday Affordable Make Up Routine

Hey lovelies!

I don't know what it is but I just love browsing blogs and being nosy about other people's make up looks and the products they use. I especially enjoy when I see other people use the same products that I have. However, the backlash is sometimes I get influenced into buying more make up than I need.

I have been wanting to do a post about my daily make up routine but since I am not a professional make up artist (and even far from being good in putting on make up), I have always put off making a post like this. I have a pretty simple and easy daily routine anyway. I like mixing up high end and affordable products but today, I decided to just use the affordable ones that I have.

So these are the affordable products I normally use for my daily make up routine.

For the face I use the following products:

Chica Y Chico Matt Fix Cushion - This has been my go-to make up base recently. I find cushions very easy and convenient to use. No need to use brushes or sponges. I use the rubicell puff included and pat the product on my face. I don't need to spend much time blending with this rubicell puff. Moreover, I love how Korean cushions are multi-functional (has sunscreen, foundation and skin benefits) so I don't need to put tons of other products on my face.

Witch's Pouch Selfie Perfect Concealer in #23 Natural Beige - It's a brush type concealer that has a very spreadable consistency. It can cover redness and some pigmentation on my skin but I guess it's no match for the luggage I have under my eyes. This concealer claims to be waterproof and super-pigmented but I think it does an average job in concealing because it wears off after a couple of hours.

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder in Buff Beige - Definitely one of my favorite powders to set my foundation and concealer! It's just so affordable and does an excellent job in holding my make up into place. It does a good job in delaying the grease on my face too. Just love it. I am glad that I was influenced by Tanya Burr into getting this stuff.

Prestige Shadow in C-162 Ballet - I know it's weird that I use an eyeshadow as a blusher, but I feel like it looks better on my cheeks than it does on my eyes! I love it so much than I am not gonna stop using this until it is completely gone from its pan. It's not matte so it gives a nice light pink glow on my cheeks. As you can see, I've almost ended the life of this Prestige Shadow so this one will be greatly missed...it lived a good, long, useful life.

For the eyes and lips I used these:

BYS Brow Gel - I'm using the shade, "03 A Blonde's Best Friend". I was duped into buying this after an SA tried it on me. I was taught that eyebrows should be a shade or two lighter if you have dark hair and a shade or two darker if you have blonde. I like using lighter shades for my brows bec it makes me think that I look younger...maybe it's just me. Anyway, it's affordable, waterproof and highly-pigmented so I like it. I only dip my slanted brush very lightly on it because a little bit goes a long way. Also, I prefer using my own slanted brush than the tiny brush included in the cap.

In2it Supreme Waterproof Eyeliner in 02 Dark Brown - I dust a little bit of pressed powder on my lids and around my eyes to help prevent that area from oiling up. I found this technique also helps my eyeliner stay on longer. For my everyday look, I don't use eyeshadows. I just apply a tiny wing (a skill that I am still trying to perfect) using this dark brown eyeliner. I found brown to look more natural than a black eyeliner. If you have been browsing my earlier posts, you'll find that I am just a big fan of this brand's eyeliners. They're all affordable, smudgeproof, waterproof, highly-pigmented and stays on hours.

Maybelline Color Tattoo in ColorInk - I use this to line my lower line as highlight to achieve the so-called Korean "Aegyo" look. I like how doing this opens up my eyes which gives me a "youthful" look and somehow masks my dark undereyes too.

Maybelline Hypercurl Volume Express - A very affordable drugstore mascara which does a great job in maintaining my lashes curled all freaking day. It's waterproof so it's good for the ladies with oily lids like mah-self.

Etude House Dear Darling Tint in 02 - I love using lip tints! This one in particular from Etude House, has a sweet scent that I like and is sooo easy to blend bec of its watery consistency. I sometimes use this on my cheeks but I have to blend it quickly before it settles. You need to give it time to dry and when it does, it lasts for hours! Just make sure you don't have dry lips otherwise it will be patchy on your lips. I apply it only on the inner parts of my lips to achieve the gradient effect that I like for my everyday look.

So here's what my make up looks like for everyday.

See how the cushion makes it seem like I had highlighter on? It looks really good on areas where light hits your face. ^.^

In affordable matte cushion, beauty

Finally, a Korean Matte Cushion for Oily Skin Gals!!!

Hey lovelies!

I am currently obsessing about cushion foundations and have been trying several products from Korea to America. I must say that I prefer Korean cushions than their American counterpart however, I just don't like how dewy and glowy they are on my already oily face.

Most Korean cushions have a moist, glowy, dewy finish. It's great if you have dry skin but, if you have oily or combo skin, you may not appreciate those cushions.

I think Korean beauty companies have realized the need to come up with a cushion that caters to oily skin gals like myself and came up with several matte cushions. I recently discovered this Korean brand, Chica Y Chico that came up with an affordable matte cushion. Their cushion is more affordable than the cushions from Etude House, The Face Shop, Missha, etc. (610php or around 20AUD / 15$)

PACKAGING:

The cushion comes in a sleek, matte black case. Just like a typical Korean brand cushion, it has 15g of product and comes with a rubicell puff and a built-in mirror. Some brands have a refill included in their product, this one does not. :(

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND INGREDIENTS:

SCENT:

This cushion has a bit of a scent. It does not remind me of anything in particular but it does have a chemical-like scent to it that doesn't last long.

TEXTURE

Like most Korean cushions, this foundation has more of a pinkish undertone than a yellow undertone (although it may seem yellowish in this photo). The sponge that holds its cushion is kinda hard when you press down and it doesn't distribute the product evenly on the sponge.

I only apply 1 layer every time I use this cushion because I find 2 layers make me look ghostly pale. Make sure that you moisturize your face like crazy prior application because it tends to emphasize the dry areas of your face. It settles quickly so I suggest you apply it on sections of your face first then immediately blend it. Because once it settles, it will not budge.

COVERAGE AND FINISH

Also, although it claims to be a matte cushion, it's not completely matte. It has a semi-matte finish which makes your skin look glowy but not dewy like most Korean cushions. I apply a setting powder on the super areas of my face and it helps tone down the glowy effect of the cushion. I don't apply powder on my cheeks because I like the sheen it gives when light hits my face, making me look like I have highlighter on but I really don't. :)

The product has light - medium coverage and has a very faint scent that disappears upon application. It doesn't do well in covering dark under-eyes and pimple scars. Unless you layer it on (which I don't like). There are only two shades available in their range #21 Light Beige and #23 Medium Beige. I bought the darkest shade, which may still look pretty light for those with medium to dark skin tone. My face is darker than my neck so I like how it lightens my face to match my neck. This stuff lasts all day on my face despite sweat and grease.

LONGEVITY:

I have been using this product for a month now and I think this is a very good everyday cushion in the summer. Although it claims to have a cooling effect, upon application, I don't notice any cooling sensation on my face. It was around 26C outside and I was sweating like a pig when I noticed my face looking shiny. I didn't have any blotting paper, tissue and powder with me at the time (because I was just out for a quick errand). Good thing the place I went to has a nice cool air-conditioned room, so my body was able to cool down. On my way back home, I took a selfie and that's how my face looked (under natural light) despite the grease and sweat on my face earlier (without blotting).

When I got home, I blotted my face with a tissue and found the pigment transferred on it. But once blotted, my foundation looked nice again. This cushion lasts for hours on my face so I don't really need touch ups through out the day, just a little blotting paper/tissue and powder is enough to make it look good all day.

If you work in a cold environment / work in an air-conditioned office, this cushion will look great all day on you!
