My Everyday Affordable Make Up Routine

Hey lovelies!

I don't know what it is but I just love browsing blogs and being nosy about other people's make up looks and the products they use. I especially enjoy when I see other people use the same products that I have. However, the backlash is sometimes I get influenced into buying more make up than I need.

I have been wanting to do a post about my daily make up routine but since I am not a professional make up artist (and even far from being good in putting on make up), I have always put off making a post like this. I have a pretty simple and easy daily routine anyway. I like mixing up high end and affordable products but today, I decided to just use the affordable ones that I have.

So these are the affordable products I normally use for my daily make up routine.

For the face I use the following products:

Chica Y Chico Matt Fix Cushion - This has been my go-to make up base recently. I find cushions very easy and convenient to use. No need to use brushes or sponges. I use the rubicell puff included and pat the product on my face. I don't need to spend much time blending with this rubicell puff. Moreover, I love how Korean cushions are multi-functional (has sunscreen, foundation and skin benefits) so I don't need to put tons of other products on my face.

Witch's Pouch Selfie Perfect Concealer in #23 Natural Beige - It's a brush type concealer that has a very spreadable consistency. It can cover redness and some pigmentation on my skin but I guess it's no match for the luggage I have under my eyes. This concealer claims to be waterproof and super-pigmented but I think it does an average job in concealing because it wears off after a couple of hours.

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder in Buff Beige - Definitely one of my favorite powders to set my foundation and concealer! It's just so affordable and does an excellent job in holding my make up into place. It does a good job in delaying the grease on my face too. Just love it. I am glad that I was influenced by Tanya Burr into getting this stuff.

Prestige Shadow in C-162 Ballet - I know it's weird that I use an eyeshadow as a blusher, but I feel like it looks better on my cheeks than it does on my eyes! I love it so much than I am not gonna stop using this until it is completely gone from its pan. It's not matte so it gives a nice light pink glow on my cheeks. As you can see, I've almost ended the life of this Prestige Shadow so this one will be greatly missed...it lived a good, long, useful life.

For the eyes and lips I used these:

BYS Brow Gel - I'm using the shade, "03 A Blonde's Best Friend". I was duped into buying this after an SA tried it on me. I was taught that eyebrows should be a shade or two lighter if you have dark hair and a shade or two darker if you have blonde. I like using lighter shades for my brows bec it makes me think that I look younger...maybe it's just me. Anyway, it's affordable, waterproof and highly-pigmented so I like it. I only dip my slanted brush very lightly on it because a little bit goes a long way. Also, I prefer using my own slanted brush than the tiny brush included in the cap.

In2it Supreme Waterproof Eyeliner in 02 Dark Brown - I dust a little bit of pressed powder on my lids and around my eyes to help prevent that area from oiling up. I found this technique also helps my eyeliner stay on longer. For my everyday look, I don't use eyeshadows. I just apply a tiny wing (a skill that I am still trying to perfect) using this dark brown eyeliner. I found brown to look more natural than a black eyeliner. If you have been browsing my earlier posts, you'll find that I am just a big fan of this brand's eyeliners. They're all affordable, smudgeproof, waterproof, highly-pigmented and stays on hours.

Maybelline Color Tattoo in ColorInk - I use this to line my lower line as highlight to achieve the so-called Korean "Aegyo" look. I like how doing this opens up my eyes which gives me a "youthful" look and somehow masks my dark undereyes too.

Maybelline Hypercurl Volume Express - A very affordable drugstore mascara which does a great job in maintaining my lashes curled all freaking day. It's waterproof so it's good for the ladies with oily lids like mah-self.

Etude House Dear Darling Tint in 02 - I love using lip tints! This one in particular from Etude House, has a sweet scent that I like and is sooo easy to blend bec of its watery consistency. I sometimes use this on my cheeks but I have to blend it quickly before it settles. You need to give it time to dry and when it does, it lasts for hours! Just make sure you don't have dry lips otherwise it will be patchy on your lips. I apply it only on the inner parts of my lips to achieve the gradient effect that I like for my everyday look.

So here's what my make up looks like for everyday.

See how the cushion makes it seem like I had highlighter on? It looks really good on areas where light hits your face. ^.^

In affordable matte cushion, beauty

Finally, a Korean Matte Cushion for Oily Skin Gals!!!

Hey lovelies!

I am currently obsessing about cushion foundations and have been trying several products from Korea to America. I must say that I prefer Korean cushions than their American counterpart however, I just don't like how dewy and glowy they are on my already oily face.

Most Korean cushions have a moist, glowy, dewy finish. It's great if you have dry skin but, if you have oily or combo skin, you may not appreciate those cushions.

I think Korean beauty companies have realized the need to come up with a cushion that caters to oily skin gals like myself and came up with several matte cushions. I recently discovered this Korean brand, Chica Y Chico that came up with an affordable matte cushion. Their cushion is more affordable than the cushions from Etude House, The Face Shop, Missha, etc. (610php or around 20AUD / 15$)

PACKAGING:

The cushion comes in a sleek, matte black case. Just like a typical Korean brand cushion, it has 15g of product and comes with a rubicell puff and a built-in mirror. Some brands have a refill included in their product, this one does not. :(

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND INGREDIENTS:

SCENT:

This cushion has a bit of a scent. It does not remind me of anything in particular but it does have a chemical-like scent to it that doesn't last long.

TEXTURE

Like most Korean cushions, this foundation has more of a pinkish undertone than a yellow undertone (although it may seem yellowish in this photo). The sponge that holds its cushion is kinda hard when you press down and it doesn't distribute the product evenly on the sponge.

I only apply 1 layer every time I use this cushion because I find 2 layers make me look ghostly pale. Make sure that you moisturize your face like crazy prior application because it tends to emphasize the dry areas of your face. It settles quickly so I suggest you apply it on sections of your face first then immediately blend it. Because once it settles, it will not budge.

COVERAGE AND FINISH

Also, although it claims to be a matte cushion, it's not completely matte. It has a semi-matte finish which makes your skin look glowy but not dewy like most Korean cushions. I apply a setting powder on the super areas of my face and it helps tone down the glowy effect of the cushion. I don't apply powder on my cheeks because I like the sheen it gives when light hits my face, making me look like I have highlighter on but I really don't. :)

The product has light - medium coverage and has a very faint scent that disappears upon application. It doesn't do well in covering dark under-eyes and pimple scars. Unless you layer it on (which I don't like). There are only two shades available in their range #21 Light Beige and #23 Medium Beige. I bought the darkest shade, which may still look pretty light for those with medium to dark skin tone. My face is darker than my neck so I like how it lightens my face to match my neck. This stuff lasts all day on my face despite sweat and grease.

LONGEVITY:

I have been using this product for a month now and I think this is a very good everyday cushion in the summer. Although it claims to have a cooling effect, upon application, I don't notice any cooling sensation on my face. It was around 26C outside and I was sweating like a pig when I noticed my face looking shiny. I didn't have any blotting paper, tissue and powder with me at the time (because I was just out for a quick errand). Good thing the place I went to has a nice cool air-conditioned room, so my body was able to cool down. On my way back home, I took a selfie and that's how my face looked (under natural light) despite the grease and sweat on my face earlier (without blotting).

When I got home, I blotted my face with a tissue and found the pigment transferred on it. But once blotted, my foundation looked nice again. This cushion lasts for hours on my face so I don't really need touch ups through out the day, just a little blotting paper/tissue and powder is enough to make it look good all day.

If you work in a cold environment / work in an air-conditioned office, this cushion will look great all day on you!

My current fave oil-control serum!

Hello lovelies!

Shout out to all the oily skin gals out there. I have discovered a skin care product that helps keep my oilies at bay. I have combi skin type and because of the hot and humid weather here in my country, I usually manage looking like a frying pan towards the end of the day (sans blotting).

I have been dealing with this problem since I hit puberty and I used to believe that long lasting make up is the solution.Until I found out that having awesome skin care routine is the answer to my oily skin troubles. I recently discovered this oil control serum from Skin Food, a popular Korean brand that uses natural and organic ingredients in their products. Seeing the porcelain-like skin of Korean actresses, it was enough to convince me to try out their skin care products (Yep, what can I say, I'm pretty gullible).

I bought this serum together with the toner from the same line (which I have reviewed here) and have been using it everyday since. The serum's packaging is very similar to their toner, twist-off cap and clear, glass bottle that resembles a sake bottle. When you remove the cap, the product is dispensed by a pump, which is nice and hygienic.

Just like you see from the bottle, the serum comes off white, with a gel-like consistency. It gives off a faint, alcohol/peachy kind of scent upon application which disappears after a few minutes. I'm not really a fan of its scent but because of its good oil control properties, I use it everyday.

The serum is very easy to blend and I think from the texture of my skin after application, it probably contains silicone. It makes my skin feel smoother which is good prior make up application. I almost don't use primer anymore and I noticed that my foundation / BB cream still manages to stay on for hours. I think together with the toner, it helps manage my T-zone area. If you use an oil-control primer with the two, your make up will be indestructible!

This serum is pretty affordable too (Php 835 - Php510 + shipping or around $10-$16/AUD30-AUD17) so you get really good bargain for its price.

Trivia Time!!

I did some research on benefits of sake for our skin and here are some of the things I found out:

1. It has antioxidants and anti-aging properties.

Sake is said to contain Ferulic acids. Ferulic acids are a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are chemicals that inhibit the oxidation process. Oxidation leads to breakdown of our cells, something that normally occurs as we get older. Antioxidants then help delay this process. Ferulic acids can inhibit Lipid Peroxidation. Lipids are important in maintaining the youthfulness of our skin thus,inhibiting its oxidation can lead to delay in skin ageing.

2. It can prevent allergies.

People with atopic eczema have dry patches on the parts with eczema. Sake has moisturising ingredients that can help relieve the effects of eczema.

3. It helps moisturize the skin.

Sake is found to contain ingredients such as Glycerol and amino acids. These ingredients are often found in cosmetics and skin care. It is said that it is not yet found which substances are responsible for this effect. However, the interactions among hundreds of nutrients in Sake such as Amino Acids, Organic Acids, Saccharides, Vitamins, Nucleic Acids and Esters are said to be attributed to it.

4. It helps whitens the skin.

Sake is said to have ingredients that controls the effects of Melanin, the skin's natural pigment. Melanin is responsible for our skin color, sun spots, age spots and freckles. That's probably why brewery workers have smooth, white hands!

5. It helps prevent rough skin.

In Japan, sake has been used as a skin toner for centuries. It contains plenty of saccharides and amino acids found in most skin care products. Some researches found out that it contains α-Ethyl Glucoside (α-EG). This α-EG, which gives the bitter taste of sake, treats rough skin through cornification of epidermal cells.

12 Things I Learned from Teaching College Students

Disclaimer: I am not generalizing all students here. Just like everywhere else, with teachers you get lazy ones and diligent ones, good ones and bad ones. In this post, I am just sharing what I learned from my experience in teaching for years in a uni. Students who read this might say, it depends on the teacher, or it depends on the subject matter, whether it is interesting or not. I am a graduate school student myself and I believe regardless, you're in school to learn. We do our duties and I hope students should know that they should do their's either. I can relate to Sheldon's dilemma in an episode of Big Bang Theory, it is hard to be a teacher. It is not merely about sharing knowledge but about performing and entertaining students in a way to make learning fun.

1. Teachers don't get paid enough.

Sadly, despite the increase in university tuition fees, the increase does not necessarily mean an increase in our paycheck. My increase comes from miscellaneous fees so if there's no miscellaneous fee increase then we don't get one either. However, it does not necessarily mean that all the increase are given to us as well. We also have unpaid overtime or get asked to do jobs outside of our job description. And if we don't do it, our work piles up or we get sanctioned by the admin.

2. We don't know everything.

Before we get to teach, we need to finish college/uni, gather experience in relation to our field, do some research, then go to graduate school. Depending on our field, some may even need to pass board exams. However, despite all our pursuits to increase your knowledge, it doesn't mean we know everything so forgive us if we cannot answer all your questions.

3. We enjoy holidays as well.

Hmm this one depends if you get paid or not. Students are not the only ones happy during vacation, suspension of classes and holidays. We enjoy it too. But it depends whether the university you work for pays you on these days. I have worked in a uni for 4 years where I don't get any pay on said days. But I still enjoy having lazy days at home even if I don't get paid.

4. We hate checking papers.

Students think we like paperwork. We don't. We barely have a social life from teaching and pursuing further education, the last thing we need is bringing work home. However, we need to require assignments, research, term papers, projects to students as part of course and also for students to try and learn things on their own. I hate spoon-feeding my students so I require them paperwork.

5. We are paper hoarders.

I kid you not when I tell you that if a fire break out in our house, my room would be the first to go kaput. I am amazed at the papers I see when I try to clean my room or my locker. I see test papers of students who have graduated years ago, index cards from semesters ago, questionnaires, etc! And for some weird reason, I can't bring myself to throw them away in case a student would come back and ask for them or whatever.

6. Students are becoming lazy.

In connection to paperwork, I noticed that when students submit their paperwork, a lot of students submit sub-par quality work. To be honest, I have noticed around 90% of my students copy things directly from the internet without even reading them or giving credit to the website they copied it from. Tsk tsk tsk.

Students should realize that it's not just about getting good grades that matters. Studying is about learning, it's about being diligent, developing proper attitude that would determine future success in life.

7. We know when students cheat.

Students are becoming creative in cheating instead. I catch one or two students cheat every exam. And their excuses are also becoming ludicrous. I once caught a female student with a cheat code inside her calculator and when I noticed the cheat code, she said, the current exam was Physics and her Spanish exam was before the present test anyway. Guys, having cheat codes is cheating!

8. Some students do not know respect.

I am disappointed to see uni students chew gum while speaking to their professors, play android games during lecture, sleep, take selfies during lecture and other disrespectful things. Sadly, I have seen some high school kids with better manners than some of the uni students I have taught. One time I had a female student who said in class that she pays me to teach. Yes it is true, my paycheck does come from a portion of each student's tuition but I am not paid to be disrespected. And just like everyone else, I work to earn my salary.

9. We are teachers inside and outside of the classroom.

I get called by my students Miss or Ma'am inside and outside of school. This makes me conscious of how I should conduct myself even when I'm not in school. I need to dress respectably even when I'm just going to a mall since I sometimes bump into some of my students everywhere. Also, I know how influential we can be to our students. I know some students who idolize their teachers. I, myself have done the same thing with my professors (which is why I became a teacher).

10. Teaching is not for everyone.

We don't get paid enough, we get disrespected, we are overworked, we have no social life, but despite all these, I have known teachers who have been in the academe for more than half of their life until they retire. It takes a lot of sacrifice and dedication to become a teacher. We get criticized by students daily from head to toe. If you want to become a teacher, imagine dealing with a lot of crap from the administration and the students everyday, and on social media. If you think you can handle all of it then go ahead. But don't say I didn't warn you.

11. We are human and we get hurt too.

In connection to dealing with a lot of crap from students, teachers are the common and easy target of jokes among students. I have seen and heard students make fun of their teachers. I have also been the object of my students' jokes. Together with the power of social media, more people get to read how students make fun of their teachers. It hurts. A lot. And the hardest part is trying to be professional despite knowing your students make fun of you behind your back.

Probably the best thing I ever experienced in teaching is the indescribable feeling I get when a student says, "Thank you." Being appreciated by your students makes us feel like the stress of our job is worth it. It makes me feel good that I have done something good in my life and made a significant contribution in society.
