Brief History of how I came across the Project Panning Community (can be skipped):
I have been watching Beauty channels on Youtube since Michelle Phan started her channel. I noticed that Beauty channels have come a long way since then. The days of using whatever make up you have in your stash is long gone. Youtubers are constantly promoting new make up products almost on a weekly basis as companies launch them constantly (Colourpop..ahem). I used to buy make up constantly as well, trying out new things, generally satisfied with what I have until something new comes along.
Because of this, my make up started to pile up and became overwhelming for me. I started to forget some of them because I store them in a place where I don't see them very often. I also became a make up hoarder. I rarely use up products, particularly the high-end ones because I spent a lot of money on them and I just want to keep them for as long as I live.
Then I had to relocate to a different country. I realised then that I can't keep everything with me. So right before I moved here in Australia, I gave away most of my make up and left myself with products that I really cling on to.
Recently, I discovered a small group of Youtubers who are quite different from the ones with bigger subscribers. They make videos showing their progress as they pan or finish up their make up products. I enjoy watching their videos because they tell you if the product is good or not as they finish it up. I'm not saying that those who make "first impression" videos are dishonest, but you have to admit that sometimes you change your mind on a product as you continue to use it. It then gives you a better idea on whether a product is worth to buy or not.
Amber F, the one who started this whole thing, completely slayed her Naked Palette within a year (I linked her video in case you're curious to watch it.)! Watching her and other panners as well is very inspiring for me. I started to look at my already small "stash" and thought long and hard which ones I would include in my first ever project pan.
Now to answer the title of this post, here are my reasons for starting a Project Pan:
1. I want to maintain my "minimal" collection.
As much as I disliked parting away from my make up, giving them away is also satisfying. I know that they would be in the hands of women who would actually appreciate them and use them. It also cleared out a lot of clutter in my vanity. I now only own 6 palettes, 2 foundations, 2 BB creams, 5 concealers, 2 correctors, 5 face powders, 2 Blushers, 2 highlighters, 3 Bronzers, 3 eye brow products, 5 eyeliners, and a lot of lip products. I know it's not much already but I want to further cut down my stash that's why I am doing this project.
2. I want to get my money's worth.
I used to feel a little anxious whenever, I hit the half-way mark on an expensive foundation or lipstick. I also avoided making low dips on my palettes. And then my husband made me realise this. Not using my make up does not mean I'm saving money from not buying it again. Make up does expire. Every time we chuck out barely used make up, we're losing our hard-earned money.
3. I want to use up my make up before it goes bad.
As I said before, make up has an expiration date. However, powder products last longer than liquid and cream products. Even though companies indicate that the eye palette is only good for 6 months (I'm referring to you ABH Modern Renaissance Palette), it doesn't mean that it goes bad the day after 6 months. Even the goddess, Lisa Eldrige keeps products longer than their expiration date (I linked her video where she talks about this)! So my point is I do have some products that are probably "expired" by now and I will continue to use them until I finish them up or they go bad (i.e smell bad, change in consistency).
4. It's fun!
Seeing dents on my make up or finishing them up is weirdly satisfying for me. I feel like patting myself on the back every time I make progress in panning (regardless of whether it's big or small). It forces me to become creative on how I use them and to slowly branch out of my comfort zone with looks. I've always thought playing with make up is fun but using them up is actually a lot more fun.

So those are my reasons why I got bitten by the Panning bug. Panning has made me realise a lot of things about myself (in terms of make up). The most important thing probably, from one make up lover to another, if you really love your make up, USE them.
I hope you continue to support my journey on my very first project pan. I will be posting my very first update next month. See you then!
